Bitch be tripping snowballs!

According to the BBC weather page, we're looking at sunshine all week, maximum of 4 degrees Celsius. It never mentioned any more snow. Currently it's blizzarding once again. I imagine that every other country in the world is looking at the UK and thinking "pffft, that's pathetic", but I love it! The prospect of actually having a white Christmas is just overwhelming, now that we're so close, it can't melt! Thinking about it, this is the first time I've mentioned Christmas on this blog, so I might as well mention what it means to me: I love the social aspect of it. The fact that arguments are dropped, if only for a few days, it's almost magical.

Anyway, what I'm here to post about today isn't Christmas, it's actually birthday related. My weekend's been very eventful, so I'm going to split it into three very exciting sections, the first is named:

Day one:
Friday the 18th of December, it meant many things, last day of term, panto day, but most importantly, Eleanor's birthday. I've always found it strange that my two best friends' birthdays are within one day of each other, but I kinda like it that way too. Unfortunately, I woke up late, so had to figure out a quick route to Eleanor's house. I tried the number 6 bus, found it, got on it, asked to go to asda (a perfectly reasonable destination), but the bus driver told me the closest he could get me was the bypass. In other words, they'd changed the route due to the snow. So yeah, I trekked the rest of the way to Eleanor's.

As I reached the park next to her house, I found before me a rather epic snowball fight. It consisted of a number of teams that slowly fell apart before my eyes. I started stockpiling, I knew this was the kind of war you had to be prepared for. So, we fought for a while, then my stockpiling plans started to overwhelm the others, sides were taken, I had two willing fighters by my side and they had five or so cowards. We ran into combat, mercilessly tearing apart the opposition. Then they decided to turn, and I lost a man. Soon after our two factioned joined together to mourn the loss of this once great warrior, then all of them went home for tea and slippers and other warm things. I headed back to Eleanors to present her with presents and to play some scrabble.

In my defence, I'd only ever played Scrabble once before, against my Grandma (she tore me apart). It was intense. there was a time where I had a Z, a K and a W. Another moment had me looking at "zookeeper" as a word. In the end, I came third in the first game and second in the second (beating the birthday girl both times). A pretty decent day if I don't say so myself.

Day Two:
This was intended to be my "resting day" of the weekend. It was James' birthday, but his plans weren't going down until the Sunday, so I had pretty much nothing to do. I sent a couple of texts around, all with different intentions: one to James to wish him a happy birthday, and one to Nat (she'd offered for me to go to hers the day before, so I was checking to see if the offer was still open). One thing led to another, and I found myself walking to the bus stop for the second day in a row. I missed the bus by like 10 seconds, and the bus stop was practically an ice rink, so I decided to not wait for the next one and play one of my favourite games:

Beat the bus!
Rules: the aim of the game is to get as far as you can before the next bus comes after missing the previous one. This includes many risks, the biggest of which being that the bus could pass you while you're between bus stops, the big upside of the game is that you could significantly reduce your bus fare.

My destination was somewhere on the other side of the bypass, so I got walking. I don't remember it snowing the previous night, and due to all the busy, busy pedestrians the ground had become really icy. The sound of ice cracking beneath your feet is a really sinister sound, even when you know there's only concrete underneath it. I think I can safely say that I beat my bus, I got to the bypass and had seen no bus at all. Eventually, I got to Nat's and met a guy called Owen, who was pretty cool. We just sat and talked for a couple of hours, it was nice to just sit around in a comfortable social environment and "chillax" for however long (3-4 hours).

Day Three:
Today was the day I was probably the most psyched about, so much so that I'd set 10 alarms the night before. Poker day. I had no idea how many people were coming, or how long the game would last, all I knew was that today would be a game that was properly finished. I made this clear at the table, I was perfectly aware that people would have to leave early, their chips would either be scrapped from the game or split between the remaining players. All I knew was that I wasn't really due home at a specific time and it was James' house, so there would be at least two players left to finish.

As predicted, two players had to leave before the game really kicked off (a mere hour and forty minutes in). Leaving the three most experienced players (Eleanor, James and myself) to it. Only a couple of hands later, my run of bad luck ended with this hand:
For the people out there who don't play poker, it's a royal flush, the best hand you can get in poker. More importantly, there's a good chance I'll never get one again. The queen of hearts was my card, the cards above are James', he had a mere straight. To be fair, I didn't win many chips from the hand, it was the pride to have such an amazing hand that got me going. I was ready to get my poker face on, and to remove any predictability from my playing style. It worked. Eleanor received a phone call telling her she was leaving in 15 minutes, I took her out about 2 minutes before she left. She wasn't really playing properly because she knew she'd be going, and I know it. But hey, winning's winning (at least, it is when it comes to poker). James and myself soldiered on, and blinds (minimum bets) continued to raise.

I dropped my playing style soon after blinds hit 100/200, I wasn't prepared to shovel out bets worth 200 for the sake of a poker face, because it wasn't working so well anymore. I split my technique into two techniques, to disguise my predictability a bit. My luck had changed a while back. I was getting quite a few high hands, especially straights. It was getting tense and I was beginning to lose more chips than I was winning. I started placing higher bets than normal when I knew I was onto something, and won myself chips worth 2500 twice, eventually swinging the game back in my favour. In the end I won it on a pair of 10s, he had one too, so really I won it on a high card. Either way, I was just happy to have finished a game properly (we hadn't done that since the summer). After that, we played out our normal tradition of watching BBC3 until about 11pm, and then I made the short but Ice walk home.

Overall, I think the weekend was 90% success, obviously missing Eleanor's birthday plans was a bit of a downer, but I made up for it, Kind of. A good start to the holiday, I sense many happy times a' comin'!

(all pictures taken by me.)

It's not the winning that counts . . .

Ok, it is. This is just some lie that losers tell themselves when they need to get over it. As it happens, i don't.

So, over the past couple of Saturdays some stuff has gone down (poker and quizzing), so I'd better get blogging about them.
In three weeks we've had two games of poker, and to be honest, both haven't ended well. Not because I lost, because we just ran out of time, a rushed ending to a game (James got lucky) does not make it a game in my opinion. But that said, we all had fun so that's okay.

Either way, I still yearn to actually have a proper game of poker that we actually finish, I feel like I haven't played since August. Things will all come together in the end!

Yesterday, I went quizzing with peoples. I got Eleanor and myself a lift to Aaron's, where we were to meet the other happy quizzers: Tom, Nicole and Callum (and Rajiv turned up when we got to the hall place thingie). We had named ourselves well: Team Rocket! The most intimidating team there was a bunch of 40-something alcoholics, but that's because we hadn't seen the two "senior" teams at the front. We came fourth, not bad for "young people", as we were called. It won't be the last, we WILL win a quiz someday, someday...

Catch up.

Poker (with added blinds!)

I haven't posted in a while mainly because I've been arranging today. It was Karolina's idea, and I liked it, so I got onto the regulars, stat (James, Eleanor and Tom). This was all very well and good, but I was fully aware that I didn't have a sixth person. I decided to ask Chris, my old primary school buddy, turns out that he used to watch it on TV all the time. Sorted.

So the match was arranged. Our players were:
  • Adam "The Showman" Batchelor
  • "The Pro" James Ellwood
  • Eleanor "Pokerface" Goodman
  • Tom "Call" Black
  • "The Addict" Chris Green
  • and Karolina "Stealth" Malinowski.

So the game started, not so well for me. Tom, Eleanor and James started to run away with it all and I quickly ran into trouble, falling to an average of 13-20 chips. While I was struggling for survival Chris started to crawl back and Tom fell into calling ridiculously obvious hands (hence the nickname "call"). This fully distracted me from Eleanor's sudden downfall, she'd had a few straights and flushes and I don't think anyone saw it coming. Alas, she couldn't hang on and crashed out of the game. This made things easier for me because I could never tell if she was bluffing or not.

The blinds (minimum bet before cards are put on the table for those who don't know) were at 30/60 now and Tom looked like he was in trouble. Chris and myself had made almost full recoveries (I had to go all in twice) and were ready to make the kill, I can't remember who actually finished him off...The blinds hit 50/100 and things really started to speed up. James, who until then was in the money, started to lose a lot of hands and took a huge loss to me, leaving him with only three chips. Suddenly the splits struck, and a win by him took only 12 chips from the huge pot. The rest came to me, he was taken out in the next hand.

At this point I was panicking. Even though I was comfortably in the cash, I had no idea how Chris and Karolina played. Also, I couldn't see most of Karolina's chips from where I was sitting so I had no idea how well she was doing. A few big hands later and Chris was all in against me and Karolina, Karolina took the pot.
Now I knew I had a problem, Karolina was a very good poker player. I hadn't noticed her until half the players were out of the game (hence the nickname "stealth"), and I knew that there was every chance that she could win. The blinds hit 400/800 during Chris' last hand. I was in a comfortable position now, because I love to raise by 1,000 at the end of a hand (hence my nickname). I lost a few and won a few against Karolina and things seemed quite even, until I started getting lucky. It only took a few hands, it could have gone either way with the blinds, but today was my day.
After poker, we all settled down for a few Mario kart tourneys. I knew Tom would be some trouble but didn't expect Karolina to be so good, just didn't realise that she actually played games I guess. I scraped the win in the first tourney, sat out so Chris could play the second (which Tom won). The third tourney was tough. Tom won the first race with me just behind him and I took the second race with similar conditions. For the third race I chose a track that truly hates me, to mix things up a bit. I came ninth, Tom came fourth. It was already decided that Bowser's Castle would be last track, which luckily i know like the back of my hand. I came just in front of James and Tom came sixth. Good competition, I'm sure I won't be so lucky next time I play them.

I'll upload the rest of the pics to Facebook ASAP.

Poker

The poker tournament is finally over! It saw nine players start off with 1838 monopoly dollars fight it out through two and a half weeks of poker. Our players were: Michael, Nichola, Eleanor, James, Hitten, Nikesh, Tom, Nick and myself.

Day 1 was one of the most interesting days, it started with 8 dollars in the first pot (figure it out) and Tom stole it early. Then we had our first casualty of the tourney, Nick went all in against Nichola and lost it all before 2pm. 8 people left, Nichola in first.

We played for about a week until our second casualty, Tom was looking pretty low on cash and he looked like he'd catch eighth place, then James went all in against Michael with an incredibly stupid hand and crashed and burned. Such a shame, James was one of my favourites. Michael storms to the front of the pack.

I started off the tournament pretty badly, heading straight to the back, but while Michael was taking out James (and then Tom), I was earning a steady income from the other players, working my way into first place. About 2 weeks in, things kicked off, Eleanor took Hitten down to 1 dollar, and I finished him off the next day, it was then that Michael and myself clashed.

All it took was one hand. Michael accused me and James (our dealer) of cheating straight away, so we counted the cards and I dealt. All was looking bad for me until the last card, a pair. Turns out Michael had two pairs from the first three cards. But a heavenly voice said "did you burn the last card?" so Michael laid down a SIXTH card (this is him cheating now), then a seventh and an eighth and a ninth! He took the ninth card and cleared the fifth (losing my pair), sixth, seventh and eighth cards. Little did he know that although he had given himself a flush (pretty good) with an ace (the best flush possible), he had just given me a straight flush (second best hand in the game). He foolishly went all in and I laughed all the way to the bank.

I was now well ahead of the rest and with only four players and one school day left, things were heating up. Eleanor "forgot" her cards on the last day so my intentions were to take out Nikesh and play Nichola and Eleanor outside of school hours. However, as all of my plans go, this failed, and Nikesh finished off Nichola glamourously at break. Leaving just me and Nikesh to battle it out at lunch time, our final school battle. I walked away with the spoils, keeping me in first with an awesome 10,900, a good two thirds of the overall money. Just me and Eleanor left.

A few days into the holiday, a convenient invitation to a BBQ at her house arrived by text, asking me to bring my cash with me. And so we played our final game of the tournament at hers. She started off pretty well, but I stole it with a lucky hand (and having much more cash in the first place) and walked away with all of my monopoly money safely in my pocket.

So, thanks to everybody involved in the tournament and thank you for looking after the cash as well. It's been great. hope we can do it again next winter!

Today

Today, I decided to go and "steal" the sims from a friend, all it was was to copy the folders onto my external hard drive and run. BUT, three hours later, I'm still here...It's been pretty cool though, mario kart, sims, stufflings.

So yeah, now that the holidays are nearly over, it's probably time to give a review of how everything went:

Saturday 4th

Went to town with loads of friends (Tom, James, Eleanor, Michael and later Emily) to look for outfits for us. Naturally, it was a total disaster. But, on a scale of one to cool, it was an awesome day. Ended up at James' where i stayed till about 11pm.

Sunday 5th

It's a blur, I either went to Michael's or stayed in, either way i didn't have my amazing sunglasses because they had taken up residence at James' :(

Monday 6th

Went to Michael's, played games and stuff, the usual, good chillout session :)

Tuesday 7th

School: Yes, i know it's a holiday and everything, but i needed some serious catch up time, so i went in and did some english, turned into mess about session, awesome. Spent the rest of the day hiding down in art with Eleanor.

Wednesday 8th

More school: Was food tech today, teacher was late due to not waking up on time, like me :) So helped out my brother's form tutor by colouring stuff in and advising her on where to get a new pair of her awesome boots.

Thursday 9th

Moreeee Schooool: Food tech again, teacher got caught up in car accident today, she came back with a handful of pieces that had fallen off of her car, nice :) Although, I will miss the civic. R.I.P To the nice looking car. She'll be driving round in a TT till she gets the new one :p

Friday 10th

Went to town, mainly to HMV, bought the bourne identity for three quid once i'd figured out which was the first film in the series. Walked to town in rain, walked half way back and visited Tom (once i'd figured what number he lived at), until rain stopped. More good chilling time, well deserved. On the downside, i picked up some nasty blisters and my converses got REALLY wet :(

Saturday 11th

Poker! Today I hosted (again) James, Michael, Nicola and Tom, James won first game (I came third) and Nicola stormed second game, winning nearly every hand. Then we proceded to play jenga (the real tough people's game) and Nicola taught us how to play a new card game, which i won at :p. We then Trekked to James' in the rain (Michael's idea >:( ) and played monopoly, I won again :p then gave people a lift home and slept.

Sunday 12th

First day i really didn't have any plans, just sat around watching TV, most likely football :p

Monday 13th

Second day i didn't have plans, got back into audiosurf today.

Tuesday 14th

Now, i WAS going to go to school, but i went back to sleep and woke up again at about 2pm, so i decided against it.

Wednesday 15th

School again: Performing arts today, out of eight students, I was the ONLY person to come in :(, did lots of work though so I'm top of the class for once! Oh, yeah, and I started a blog :p

Thursday 16th

Even more school: More performing arts...more loneliness. Sigh.

Friday 17th

Last day of school!: IT and English today, got pestered by Ewan all of first IT session (was late so it wasn't long :P) then browsed through my awesome original writing story with Eleanor to check up on grammar to make it an A* (will post another time). Is the only A* I'll ever get in english so don't worry. Did more IT and went home.

Saturday 18th

Decided to go to James' so we could copy the sims 2 games that my idiot brother deleted. Still here now, and has just gone 10pm, as long as i get to see some lovely rupert and salem cats I'm happy (:

Sunday 19th

Am entering the relms of predicting the futuuuuuuuuuuuuure. I'm probably doing nothing.

So yeah, overall things have gone quite well for a holiday, and now i have this amazing blog, I can bore you all half to death about it :D.
